International Prognostic Index (IPI)
The IPI is the prognostic index for aggressive lymphomas. It was developed in 2,031 patients of all ages with aggressive NHL who received doxorubicin-based combination therapy1. The study identified five clinical features that were independently associated with survival: age, stage, number of extranodal sites, performance status and serum LDH level.

Because the relative risk associated with each of the clinical features was comparable, an individual patient's risk of death was determined by adding the number of adverse prognostic factors present at diagnosis. The relative risk of death in patients with each possible number of adverse prognostic factors was determined and an index for risk was devised. The IPI was developed for patients with aggressive NHL of all ages, but for young patients (60 years or younger) a simplified age-adjusted IPI based on just three prognostic factors (performance status, disease stage and LDH level) was described1.
